1 September 2008

Today, I was searching for information in books. My missions for today are look at the bookstores, ask friends if they have any books about how to make bags, and searching pictures of bags in the fashion magazines. I have looked at the bookstores in Mall Kelapa Gading (MKG; since this mall is the nearest mall to my house) which are Gramedia, TGA Bookstores, and Periplus. Out of those three bookstores, I found a good one in Gramedia, the book is in English, but the only problem is the price of the book which is around Rp 200,000,-. I don’t have that much money to buy the book and I hesitated to ask my parents to buy that book. I was thinking, is it worth it to buy the book or not with that expensive price. Then, I decided not to buy it because the price is too expensive and I thought that I won’t need it again later after I made my personal project, and I’m not really sure if I really need the book, because what if at the end the book is just a figure in my research note but at the end I didn’t use the book for my personal project? So, I made my decision to not buy the book. The pictures of bags that I found in the fashion magazines are a lot and all of them are nice. I was selecting from those designs that suited with my personal project: dual-purpose bags; which means the kind of bag that can be turn inside out without resulting strange looks if we turn it inside out. I found some and I put it on my research note.
The difficulty that I found is that to search for a specific kind of book how to make handbags. Sometimes, there is a book to make handbags, but the language is in Japanese, or the price is too expensive that I don’t think that I would buy it because I don’t have that much budget for it. So, I solved it by searching for Indonesian or English books that I can afford. Beside that, I also found the difficulty in finding the right bag pattern/design that suitable to turn inside out but still looking good. I have to imagine and visualize how I can make the bag later and confirm it to my aunt and her tailor. This activity leads me to have a better understanding about PP and its expectations because I searched for books that related to my personal project and something that I can use and worth it for my personal project. If I just search for the book but I just put it as one of the MLAs in my research notes at the end, it wouldn’t worth it to spend much money to buy the book.
I can do differently by searching in the other malls or bookstores and in school’s library. I think school’s library is a good option because if there’s book about bags, I can borrow it without have to buy it. Beside that, I also can buy the latest fashion magazine and search to the latest up-to-date bags and find that if there’s bag that can be considered to suite with my kind of bag.
